This blog is in memory of our beloved Border Collie Tippy who died on July 28th 2010. Every Sunday over the course of the next few months I will post memories and pictures of her life with us, both as a working farm dog, family pet, best friend and work mate.

Never refuse a pleasure.


These past few weeks I've been posting pictures of Tippy the hiking dog. She didn't always get to go on walks with us because sometimes it wasn't wise, especially if there was a chance of having to pass through cows as she didn't like cows one bit. Anyway there was this one time when I decided to go by myself and leave Tippy at home with Vicki. They gave me a ride as far as the woods above Chatsworth House and then dropped me off. This was all fine up to the point where they drove off because as I waved them goodbye I spotted Tippy's little face through the back window of the car and it was a terrible heart wrenching picture, one which rendered a nice days hiking impossible.

So I quickly started waving my arms frantically in the hope that Vicki was looking through her rear view mirror. Thankfully she recognised the waves as ones of distress rather than ones of goodbye and duly brought the car to a halt. There was a kind of smug look on Tippy's face as I opened the car door to let her out.

My advice to you is never refuse your dog a pleasure in their lives because one day they will be gone and then it's to later. I'm sure glad I listened to my heart.

    You told this story so beautifully that I could envision the entire scene.

    What a good lesson for all. I bet it was a fun hike that day.

    I do love to walk with my dog as I find it a great bonding time. I would love to do a multi-day walk but there are too many restrictions. Tippy was easier to walk with than Tommy as she was much more agile and took everything in her stride whereas Tommy struggles over stiles and seems to suffer from the effects of a days walk that its got so I daren't take him these days.

    Yes I know what you mean about not taking a dog on a fully day's walk: I don't take Pippa at the moment for more than about 3 hours. I do intend to try to get her fit for it though, because she's in her prime and I think I should. Lovely story! - what a nice blog to find.
